What is YOUR Signature Scent?

Nothing can make a woman feel more sexy and confident than wearing that perfect perfume. She will hold her head high, throw her shoulders back, and strut her stuff like no other.

But finding that one (or perhaps several) brands that smell amazing, smell amazing on US, and make us feel like a Hollywood starlet is easier said than done! Believe me, I know ;) I’ve went through so many perfumes that were pretty decent, some merely okay, others more meh. It wasn’t until a month ago that I found THE one, the scent that will be my signature scent forEVAH!

Beginning the hunt for your signature scent

It’s easier to find that perfect scent if you already have some idea of what you are looking for. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of different kinds of scents out there as well as varying strengths. Are you the girl that likes sultry smoky scents? Spicy Oriental smells? Delicious smells like vanilla that make people want to lick your arm? Clean crisp scents? Woody scents? It is very difficult for someone at the perfume counter to zero in on perfumes that may be something you’ll enjoy unless you already have an idea of what you like. I am a clean scent girl! Something girly and yet not overpowering, like I just stepped from the shower.

Testing scents

I highly recommend that when you begin your scent search, you go to a store like Ulta or Sephora, or even the perfume counters at Macy’s etc. I find that the folks that work there are VERY knowledgeable and can offer assistance when searching for that scent that just begs to be worn. And stores like these will have paper testing strips that places like Wal-Mart and Target won’t have. You don’t want to run into a store and begin spraying perfume all in the air or worse, all over your own body. The scents will mingle in a NOT so good way and you will probably leave the store with a blinding headache. Instead, spray a bit on the testing paper.

Now, when you find a perfume that makes your eyes open wide and smile, it may be time to try it on your skin. This is very important! The perfume won’t smell exactly the same on the paper as it will when it interacts with your skin. AND the same scent on someone ELSE won’t smell the same as it will on you either! So don’t spray the hell out of your friends arm and think that is a good enough test. While a scent may smell amazing on her, it may not interact the same with your own body chemistry.

Purchasing your scent!

Now that you’ve found that perfect scent, proudly take that sucker to the counter and don’t look back! Just fair warning, the scents that are often worth their weight in gold often seem to cost as much ;) BUT I have found that when it comes to perfume, you get what you pay for. The cheaper the scent, the worse it often is. I have pretty sensitive skin. I can’t even use laundry detergent, fabric softener, overly perfumes body washes without breaking out. The same thing happens when I buy cheap body sprays and cheap perfumes from Wal-Mart or knock-off brands. I can wear most designer fragrances without any reaction at all. And with the expensive fragrances, a little goes a LONG way! You don’t have to keep applying all damn day to stay smelling amazing. So the price evens out in the end.

My signature scent

I can hear you all now: “But what is YOUR scent! I’m DYING to know!” Well, there’s a little story that goes along with it. My mom informed me that Taylor Swift had her own perfume. I had no idea which is strange since I am totally and completely in LOVE with this girl!

Taylor Swift's perfume, Wonderstruck

Anyway, we went to the local Ulta store so I could smell it. I already decided that if I liked it, I was going to buy it! Well, much to my disappointment, I didn’t like the smell. It was way too sweet, reminiscent of cotton candy. We spent some time looking around and my mom came across a display case for J’adore by Christian Dior.

Charlize Theron is so beautiful!

Mom grabbed the display bottle and sprayed some on the test paper. I was in heaven! She sprayed me on the arm with some and it was like this magical connection between me and that scent that was meant to be. I literally couldn’t stop smelling myself all day! It’s clean and girly and something about it just fits my body chemistry perfectly.

How do you KNOW when you find your signature scent

You’ll know. Trust me! The minute you smell it on your skin, you’ll know. Another indicator? When people ask you what you’re wearing! I have never had someone ask me what perfume I was wearing until I bought J’adore. I have had both men and women stop me and ask the name of my perfume.

So there you have it! Finding a signature scent can be super fun! Make it a girls day out! Have lunch, hit up the Ulta store, and help each other find that scent that will make men go wild and other women green with envy! Just don’t be stingy with the name of your scent! Sharing is caring!

Oh, that was a fun post! My signature scent…well, my very favorite is Michael Kosr by, you guessed it, Michael Kors. A descirption on a website: “Dewy freesia and Moroccan incense mingle seductively with blue orris, white peony and the intense carnality of tuberose to amplify but a single message in subwoofer pitch: “I am woman, hear me roar!”” LOL. I love it. I like a lot of others, but this is my very favorite.

I haven’t found my signature scent. I used to wear perfume but, ever since my first pregnancy, all of the ones that I’ve tried have smelled chemically to me : (

I’ll keep an eye on this post and maybe try all of the ones suggested.

Who knows! I might find it yet..

Mark Jacobs for me! Or Petite Cherie by Annick Goutal. Can never decide which one I like better…lol.

Great post. It is very important, I agree to find the right signature scent that says, YOU. It might help, when searching out your scent, to go to a site like this: http://beauty.about.com/od/fragranc1/a/different-types-of-perfume.htm
to educate you on the categories of perfume. I’m a bit between citrus and woodsy so knowing that helps me when searching for a new scent. I have found that you go through a progression of scents as your body changes through life. But, you are right, the right perfume builds your confidence and makes the world feel right.

Hmmm…L’Oreal shampoo? The kind for color-treated hair?
Actually, I have a bottle of Kiehl’s Tuberose lotion. That’s about as close as I get to perfume. Your post is food for thought, though…
    Peace,
    Liv

Oh, you make this sound fun! I need a girls day with a girl that’s girly enough to want to try perfumes! LOL…

Fun post. Miss Dior Cherie for me! I tried this stuff about three years ago and I haven’t even looked at (sniffed?) another perfume since. I wear it around the house sometimes because it makes me feel like I’m in heaven.

I rarely wear perfume anymore, though sometimes I’ll use something vanilla scented. When I was in school, I started wearing my boyfriend’s Obsession for Men. It smelled great … and was a hoot when the big, bad DEA agents I was working with came up and told me how nice it was to have someone working in their midst who smelled like a girl!

I re-invent myself every few years and that involves a new scent. For almost two years, it’s been Flora by Gucci.
