Movie Remakes: Too Far??

I love a good movie.

And by that I mean I love action movies filled with car chases, gun fire, explosions, twists and turns, tanks and heavy artillery. I also go for movies that involve magic, alien species, space travel (especially if that includes something trying to suck your face off). Chick flicks usually don’t interest me and nor do romantic comedies (for the  most part). When I sit down in that theater chair with my popcorn and Reeces Pieces (no soda as I have a bladder the size of a walnut), I want to be entertained. I don’t necessarily want anything deep or moving or relevant to today’s world.

I just want to be entertained.

However, this is becoming difficult since it seems as though Hollywood is only interested in remaking movies rather than coming up with anything new. I liked the original movie and don’t want to spend $800 to go see a remake.

Okay, I may have exaggerated a tad about the high cost of the movies but I wasn’t far off.

But the fact remains that there has been an awful lot of remakes coming out: Karate Kid, Footloose, Arthur, King Kong, Pink Panther, Total Recall, Spider Man (I know it’s a different bad guy but seriously…enough already!). The thought of watching anyone but Arnold in Total Recall makes me cringe. Arnold is Douglas Quaid and no one else will ever fill those shoes.

Is Hollywood so low on ideas that they just look back through old movies and say “Gee, let’s pin 100 of them onto  spinning board and remake the one the pointer hit!” Umm…*cough cough* I can hand over some books that would make damn fine movies ;)

And not just my books! I have read plenty of books that would make awesome movies (as long as they aren’t butchered too badly).

What do you think? Am I the only one fed up with all the remakes? Or is it fun to see a different take on a movie?

One comment I came across on this subject is that since the studio already owns the rights to a particular movie/story, they don’t have to pay for a new one and take a chance. Also, if they wait until all the main folks involved are out of the picture then they don’t have to pay furhter royalities. Look at how much it took to get the Tolkein estate to release the rights to the Hobbit.

I totally agree; this has gotten way out of hand.

I haven’t seen the Total Recall remake, but from the trailers and reviews I think they should have left it alone. In fact. most remake movies should be left alone. They usually end up worse than the original

I totally agree…however, I did see Total Recall last night, and I thought it was great. Most of the audience seemed to be excited about it, and several people said “Better than the original” as they left the theatre. The plot was certainly changed up a little so that helped, but I’m also biased because I’m not a big Ah-nold fan. :)

I’m the opposite: love Arnold so I can’t picture anyone else in the role. lol

However, Colin is quite the hunky chunk of man flesh… ;)

He sure is! The entire cast was pretty, really. I went with my parents, so all of us found something pretty to stare at. I, of course, was only interested in the special effects. ;)
