Evolution of a Book Cover

As I wait excitedly for The Chosen to launch with my new publisher, Booktrope Publishing, I found myself taking a mental journey back to when I started this whole process of going from self-published author to an author published with an amazing publisher, one that loves its authors and works very hard to help them get their books into the hands of fans.

I was moving pictures of the cover for the re-release into a nice little folder in my writing USB drive (I HATE having a cluttered desktop) and I sat and stared at the three covers that have graced the book and I thought I would share them here.

Evolution of The Chosen Book Cover

This was the first cover and I still get shivers every time I see it. It’s as if my artist, Eric Malbone, was able to get inside my head and bring one of my fictitious worlds to life. Those of you who have read The Chosen will recognize this as being a Gentran swimming through the deep waters of its world.

After Eric had done the cover for my first YA/fantasy series (Dangerous Reflections…you can see it in the right hand side of the website) he wanted another crack at the cover of The Chosen. He imagined something like a movie poster showing multiple aspects of the book at the same time. We thought it would be good to add in a human and maybe draw people to the cover. This cover is brilliant! The colors are eye-catching and the green swirls around the man’s body as he emerges from a portal looks like it is seriously glowing. Eric even added the symbols along the side, something I had never thought of adding to the original cover. The back shows a planet being attacked by the Mekan fleet. This was definitely a step up from the first, which is saying something since I loved the first one!

And this is the cover for the re-release through Booktrope. For this one, I chose a scene from the book so that readers. when they get to the part in the book, will gasp and turn to the cover and perhaps squeeeee in excitement. That’s what I do when I come across that in books ๐Ÿ˜€ Eric wanted to do the book as though the camera was inside the portal and we are getting a glimpse of the General and some of his Chosen as he demonstrates the terrifying nature of the portal. I love what he’s done with the purple and swirling reddish gold around the vortex. The lightning in the symbols is just too COOL! For this series, the publisher and I have decided to go with my maiden name to separate it from the YA/fantasy series, Adventures of Alexis Davenport. I seriously LOVE this cover. Eric just seems to get better and better with each one he does! ๐Ÿ™‚

So what do you think? Which cover makes you want to pick up the book and check it out (which I hope you’ll do Aug 20th when it launches!)

Shay, I finished Twisted Reflections, now I want to read Dangerous Reflections. Loved the setting of Twisted and enjoyed the characters and story line. The Chosen sounds a bit different. When you let us know that it’s out, I’ll snag and read that, too. I like the final cover. Give my compliments to Eric.
