Lab Coat Done Dr. Fab Style!!

I bought a lab coat awhile ago for use in my anatomy and physiology classes I’ll be teaching next semester. It’s a nice coat and fits me good but there was just something lacking, something that I needed to do to make it a lab coat worthy of Dr. Fab.

One of my students gave me a pin in the shape of the Star Trek insignia and I attached it to the pristine white lab coat. It was better, but still it didn’t scream “I belong to Dr. Fab!” the way I had hoped.

What to do?

I remembered seeing T-shirts for the amazing game that was mentioned on the Big Bang Theory and was created by Sam Kass and Karen Bryla: rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock. Most of you probably know how the original rock, paper, scissors is played. Well, it’s pretty much the same thing except you have a lizard and Spock added to the mix. Here’s how the break down works (taken from Wikipedia):

  • Scissors cuts paper
  • Paper covers rock
  • Rock crushes lizard
  • Lizard poisons Spock
  • Spock smashes scissors
  • Scissors decapitates lizard
  • Lizard eats paper
  • Paper disproves Spock
  • Spock vaporizes rock
  • Rock crushes scissors

I tried to do an iron-on transfer onto the back of my lab coat but either due to the fabric or user error (I am going with the latter on this one), the iron-on didn’t stick and peeled most of the way off. Except for the seam (which I actually thought would be the part that wouldn’t stick. Go figure) and a couple random spots. I was pretty upset devastated. Rather than leave the back of the lab coat looking like crap, I went out and bought some fabric paints hoping I could salvage the mess.

Here’s the result, which isn’t too bad seeings how I had to draw free-hand with a pencil (a couple of the hands were mostly intact left over iron-on).

So what do you think? It’s a start in the right direction for nerdy Dr. Fab but there’s still work to be done. I’m thinking some patches of a TARDIS, perhaps some Star Trek and Star Wars symbols…
