Interview with Fantasy Authors Lisa Fender and Toni Burns

Please welcome Lisa Fender and Toni Burns, authors of the awesome fantasy novel, Fable. I am currently reading this on my Kindle and am thoroughly enjoying the story. Here’s the cover and blurb:
Front cover of Fable

Blurb: Stevie Barrett lives an ordinary life in Golden, Colorado, where nothing remarkable ever happens. That is until right before her high school graduation, when Stevie’s life takes a bizarre turn. Her best friends, Jack and Alyssa, want to be supportive, but are confused by the events plaguing Stevie.

Stevie’s mom is attacked by men with glowing gold eyes. A strange being spies on Stevie, hidden in shadow. She has waking visions of a people called the Djen and their archaic world. And when her and her BFFs don’t think it can get any weirder, Stevie heals a stranger with a touch. The abilities build until they are a tidal wave awakening within her and threaten her sense of reality.

Her efforts to understand what is happening lead her and her friends to discover a group known as the Rebellion. These warriors from another dimension are hunting her. Their leader is a man bent on destroying Stevie and possessing her legacy. In order to stop him and save everyone she loves, Stevie and her friends must embark on a quest to find and return Tecton, one of the five Orbs—relics—of the other plane she comes to know as Djenrye. The journey will alter everything she believes, propelling her into another world and another life.

Lisa and Toni are joining me for a little Q&A here on the website so site back and enjoy!

Dr. Shay: What city do you live in? And do you both live there?

Lisa: I live in Golden

Toni: I live in Wheatridge

Dr. Shay: I’m from Longmont but reside over on the other side of the mountains from y’all. So I gotta ask, since you don’t live in the same suburb, how do you guys pull off writing a book together? Meet at someone’s house? Coffee shop? Mountain lake?

Lisa: We meet at my house two nights a week and on Saturdays. Although lately we changed our schedule to Monday mornings, Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. We do better in the morning, especially if we have Starbucks on hand!

Dr. Shay: And I thought my schedule was bad! So just out of curiosity, what are your favorite movies? It’s okay if they are different 😉

Lisa: My list is pretty long, but I love Harry Potter, The Terminator movies, The Predator movies, The Aliens movies (you know the ones with Sigorney Weaver) Lord of the Rings, The Borne movies, The Mummy movies, I think you get my drift.

Dr. Shay: Sounds like movies right up my alley!

Toni: It is hard to pick just one. Off the top of my head, I have to say the original French version of Insomnia. I also very much enjoyed Avatar – a bit bunny-huggerish, but beautiful. FernGully, the Last Rainforest – okay, okay, not action, horror or psychological thriller – wait, that could be my quirk… I love animated kid films and the complete opposite end.

Dr. Shay: You and your sis are on totally different ends of the spectrum! Okay, so what about music? Are you guys opposite on that as well?

Lisa: I am a classic rock fan! I love Heart, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Bob Seger,  The list goes on. But my favorite songs are Crazy on You and Radar Love.

Toni: Favorite music, wow, again, pretty much all genres except country (although I do LOVE Patsy Kline). I listen to everything except Not the pop stuff. I think that’s why I don’t care for country music. Right now my passion leans toward female singers (Adelle, ZZ Ward, Billie Holiday, Indigo Girls… I could go on forever).

Dr. Shay: Did you know that it is illegal to lend your neighbor you vacuum cleaner (seriously, not even kidding) in Denver? Have you ever done this? If yes, I may have to turn you in for the crimestopper reward…;)
Lisa: I really had no idea that there was a stupid law like this one, but i have heard of some really stupid laws that are probably still on the books in Colorado. I would have to say that I am guilty of this crime. how many years am I facing?
Dr. Shay: *shakes head ruefully* You could be looking at the chair…
Dr. Shay: Was it difficult to write a book together? Did you both write all of it, one write and the other edit, or each take a chapter?
Lisa: Yes, it can be difficult sometimes, mainly if we’re both tired and can’t see the computer anymore. We tend to get slap happy and laugh at everything! I wrote the book and Toni and I revise it together, then we send it to our two critique partners, then come back to that chapter and fix their critiques. After that it goes to my good friend Michael, who lives in another state. He is quite a good editor. After he is finished with the chapter, we go over it together over the phone and fix again. Then on to the next chapter, and the process starts all over again. 😉
Dr. Shay: Did you fight a lot? Call you mom and tattle on each other? 😀
Lisa: No, we don’t fight a lot. We have fought I think twice and it was mainly because Toni had to cancel coming over and I was nervous about getting the book done on time in order of having a “free” editor by the end of the year. And yes, we do call our mom and tell on each other!
Dr. Shay: My sisters and I totally tell on each other. Strange how as grown women we are STILL afraid of our parents
Dr. Shay: Any weird quirks about yourselves that you’d like to share?
Lisa: Yes, I do have one, I am really weird about food. I am very picky about it, almost to the point that I won’t eat. People take it personally, but it’s just me.
Dr. Shay: So if I went to serve you Rocky Mountain oysters, you wouldn’t try it, eh? LOL
Lisa: I absolutely wouldn’t try it. In fact, you probably would be hard pressed to get me to eat what you normally cook. I’m that weird about food
Toni: Quirks? Clearly I am ADD. Tee hee hee.
Dr. Shay: I don’t think I have…SQUIRREL!!!!!
Dr. Shay: Are you married and do you have kids? Is Stevie based on anyone in particular?

Lisa: We are both married and we both have two kids each. Also they are one boy and one girl each. I have the two grandkids from my daughter. Stevie is based on me, (Lisa). I am adopted, I have long blonde hair and blue eyes. Stevie is taller than me, coz I have always wished i was taller, but she is like me pretty much. We are both into saving the wolves, and the planet, and we both are open to supernatural possibilities, such as Aliens.
Dr. Shay: Well, you’ve created one hell of a character. I love Stevie and can’t wait to see what happens next!
Many thanks for Lisa and Toni for stopping by on the website today! Make sure you guys check out their new novel, Fable, NOW AVAILABLE

I know Lisa and Toni personally. They are great people and so deserve the fruit of their labor. I have read a few chapters of the book throughout the process but have not read the entire book. I bought several copies and know I won’t be able to put it down.
