Treasures I Found While Digging my Garden

I spent several hours yesterday afternoon turning the soil and getting rid of weeds in the little spot that will be home to my wee garden. I don’t eat much so don’t need tons of plants. It’s back-breaking work but I love being outside 🙂 I hit one spot and hauled the shovel-full of dirt up and turned it over and spotted what looked like newspaper. I bent down to examine the clod of dirt and found what appeared to be some sort of bones. I knew they weren’t dog or cat bones and most certainly not human. But they were definitely bones of some kind, I knew at least that much. I kept digging and unearthed several more. They were strange, almost alien looking. My imagination made up a story about the people who first built the house. I may have to write it up and share it someday 😉

Anyway, I brought the bones into work today and one of the professors recognized them as belonging to a cat fish. The two larger ones are the top part of the skull, the one to the right is the dorsal fin, and the other two are pectoral fins. Curious as to why anyone would bury fish outside in the dirt, I did some searching. Turns out it was common practice in Egypt to bury a fish along with the grain seeds. The Native Americans used to do the same thing. Apparently, fish make hella good fertilizer 😀

Have any of you ever found a treasure while digging your yard?
