Bathroom Revonations

It’s the first weekend of spring break so what do I do? Plan a bathroom renovation. Perfect weekend for it since I am off all this week and had to stay with my folks since Friday (no toilet and all that LOL). Just thought I’d share some of the before and semi-after pictures. I say semi-after because I still have no toilet or vanity until later this afternoon.

Those are some nice before shots, eh? My dad came over and we took everything out Friday afternoon. Then got an early start on Saturday. His back was hurting (I think it was from trying to pull up the linoleum) so I did the mastic and laid the tile. I was nervous at first but once I got the hang of how to spread the mastic, how thick to make it, and the rhythm of putting in the tile, it went pretty quickly. It only took about 4 hours to get it all done.

I had to be complicated in my choice of tile LOL I chose tile that has octagons and squares in a 12 x 12 sheet. I got a single sheet of glass tile that was a combination of black, dark grey, and blue-grey and used all but the black to add random splashes of color. My mom and I set up the tile in the living room weeks ago so we could make sure we liked the placement of the colored tiles prior to actually laying them down in the bathroom. And this was the result:

View from the hallway. LOVE how much brighter it looks with the lovely tile!

Isn’t it gaw-geous???? Once I get all the stuff put back in and the trim put back up, I’ll post some of the final product! 😀

Even then it will be only 3/4 finished as I still want to get rid of the two medicine cabinets above the vanity and the metal cabinet above the toilet 😀

I did hit one little snag during the process. I think the grout was too thin the first time around. It was the first time my dad had used this grout stuff that can be used in place of sealer. This bottle of liquid is used on place of the water that you would normally mix with the grout. It looked like it went down okay but when I came back to the house later to check on the cats, there was cracks and holes in the grout. I ended up mixing more and did it thicker than my dad did the first time around and it worked like a charm. But having to wipe off grout and buff twice plus lay the second coat gave me blisters in my right hand. It only added to the pain in my knees and back and arms from the rest of the weekend LOL It’s worth it, though. I learned how to tile and did just fine 😀

Have any of you ever done home renovations? What did you do and how did it go? I’d love to hear from you!
