The Joy of Adopting A Stray Cat

If you’ve been following my blog for even just a little, you have probably figured out by now that I have two cats, Buddy and Oreo. Buddy has been, well my buddy for fourteen years. I’ve had him since he was a baby and he’s truly a Mama’s boy 😉

In December of 2013, I adopted little Oreo. She was  a stray living at the university where I teach. I saw her a  couple of times when I was teaching evening classes and my heart just broke to see this little black and white fur ball crying and shivering in the freezing cold 😦

Things were a little rough at first. Between the fighting and her being diagnosed as having feline herpes, I didn’t think it was going to work out having her in the house. But with patience that was often hard to come by, I persevered, keeping Oreo in her room for months to allow her and Buddy to acclimate and making sure to give Buddy lots of love and attention.

And while they aren’t best of friends, things have settled down.

Not snuggling but definitely close!

The most amazing part of adding Oreo to the family has been watching her transform from a frightened little thing, jumping every time I so much as changed positions on the couch, to staying sound asleep when I pet her. She’s comfortable and happy, enjoying the life all pets deserve: plenty of food and water, lots of love, safe, warm, healthy. When I watch her sleeping, it brings tears to my eyes to imagine her life as it used to be and what it is now.

My little darling :)

This picture pretty much says it all doesn’t it?  😀
