Practical New Year’s Resolution

I don’t do New Year’s Resolution. Never have and probably never will. I don’t feel the need to put pressure on myself to be bigger, better, thinner, sweeter, healthier, smarter, calmer, whatever. I’m pretty much just me, all year long.

However, in light of a recent event that could have turned out WAY worse than it did, I sort of feel the urge, for the first time ever, to actually make a resolution. *shocked face*

It was a normal Sunday and I made myself breakfast (eggs and toast). Did the dishes, went to the grocery store, returned home, brought the loot inside…and smelled something burning. I live in an old house so I panicked, thinking my wiring was going haywire and that my house was about to catch fire. I was contemplating  getting the cat carriers out of storage when I noticed that the smell was only in one spot in the kitchen.

Next to the stove.

The little red light was off, and I remember turning the burner off that morning. Or did I? I noticed that one of the knobs was tweaked off to the side just a skosh. I picked up my giant package of toiler paper and found this on the bottom:

new years resolution

Yeah… that.

*facepalm* And while I have to replace one of my burners, the incident turned out to have a rather hilarious ending. But it could have gone so much worse. So this year (and all the years of my life) I am going to purposely develop a case of OCD in checking to make sure that my stove is off. Every minute of every day.

And I think I might refrain from putting anything on the stove except pots and pans…

As far as resolutions go, I used to be one of those people who made them every year–only to promptly break them. These days, I don’t bother with resolutions anymore. When I want to change something, I just start working on it right away. So much less pressure when the New Year comes around too…

Glad that fire wasn’t worse! I wish you a safe and productive year.
