Why I Love The Sandlot

You're killing me, Smalls...

You’re killing me, Smalls…

Watched The Sandlot the other night and it reminded me so much of my childhood. Not the baseball or the fact that the main characters were boys, but just the overall feel of it.

My sisters and I adore this movie and have said the lines over and over in conversations with other people, some who knew what were were talking about, and others having no clue. At which point we would tell them in no uncertain terms that they needed to go watch the Sandlot immediately.

I’m sure most people my age can remember the days of being gone all day in the summer months, shouting a hasty good-bye to your mom in the early morning hours and not returning home until just before dark. There were no cell phones, only the neighborhood kids running amok in a local park, at one of the schools in the area, or maybe playing baseball, just like in the movie. My dad played little league softball so we often played with his ball and glove.

And of course there’s the swimming pool, where many neighborhood kids could be found during the sweltering summer months. Of course, I never tried to drown myself to kiss the hot lifeguard…

The thing that also strikes home is the exaggeration. The dog is portrayed as a giant machine, snorting and spitting steam, growling like a dinosaur. And Palledorous tells the terrifying tale of the Beast (aka Hercules the dog), a neighborhood legend who eats baseballs and anything else that comes over the fence. If there’s one thing my sisters and I know, it’s the art of exaggeration  🙂

What movie do you watch that brings back childhood memories?

I loved The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca. Go figure, huh. Bogey was the man!
