Hooray, I Don’t Have Breast Cancer!

I had my biopsy on Wednesday of last week. I guess I was way more nervous than I thought because I ended up with a nasty respiratory tract infection that required some serious medications (Z-Pac, codeine cough medicine, and an inhaler). Anyone who knows me will tell you that I rarely ever get sick and when I do, it’s nothing big. Little sniffle and it’s over and done. I ended up having to cancel several classes which I have never had to do. Not exactly fun to deal with on top of a breast biopsy. I was told the results would be in by Friday afternoon so I patiently waited for the phone to tell me whether or not the lesion was cancerous or benign. I ended up calling around 3 o’clock in the afternoon and was told that I don’t have cancer….YAY!!!!!!!!!!! But that I did have something called a radial scar.

Apparently these little guys aren’t scars like we think of them and mimic the appearance of cancerous tumors which is why when they are spotted in mammograms or ultrasounds, they require a biopsy. Radial scars are considered benign, however, a small percentage of them can become cancerous. Rather than wait around, the only option is to have it surgically removed. It makes total sense to me. Take the damn thing out while it’s still small and benign. Much better than waiting and hoping that you happen to be one of the ones that doesn’t have it turn cancerous.

My radiologist that did the biopsy said that my radial scar is so small and subtle that he would have missed it had it not been for St. Mary’s having the new 3D imaging technology.

Have an appointment on Friday to meet with the surgeon to plan a course of action and set the date for the surgery. Hoping to do it that Monday of Thanksgiving break so I can have the whole week off to recover and relax before having to come back to work.

Keep the well-wishes and prayers coming, for me as well as for all the other women out there who don’t get the good news after their breast biopsies.

Yes, it’s just an out-patient thing. The doc said the recovery should be sumilar to the biopsy. Little soreness and tenderness that can be handled with ibuprofen šŸ˜€ Thanks for thinking of me. ā¤
